I wanted to continue pushing elements up the user flow, So I considered a collage of images to represent a story as a whole before reading any of the content.

In the example on the upper right I experimented with laying out comments and related stories like a traditional online publisher (NYT/Vox for instance). This seemed too much of a step backwards in the project development.

I had always received good feedback on the hexagons, to I tried them again.

Working with them in terms of design and tech are both a massive chore. I liked the flow before where users can continue to generate more content by clicking on a node. I tried this above with squares. Didn't receive good feedback on this. It was deemed unnecessary.

Small images floating in a sea of white led to them disappearing a d loosing their power. I tried changing the background to compensate for this.

In building out this UI, I realised this excessive complication of a customisable board didn’t serve the users ability to navigate the content. It needed a much simpler structure to the interaction and layout.

So I tried layout the images based on proximity. Images closer to the centre are newer and therefore more related and further out less related. However, this brought back issues of tiny images I had previously.

Hexagons back to the rescue. Using the same model of using the proximity to convey time but this time forming clusters.

I found a similar project to mine that had many more images dotted around the screen. But it seemed to work just by making the background black. I then simplified by showing time only on one axis and allowing the user to scale the content.
