From the visualisations i found before I wanted a structure to the content while reflecting the messiness of the data. Below I try to show how clusters of stories are related and related to other clusters. The blue cluster of dots represents a twitter discourse related to a story. Presented this way to give the hierarchy to the new outlets.
The red cluster represents journalists discussing a story like on the journalist social media platform CJR.

The NYT API is really good at providing keywords so I experimented with using this to start prototyping this UI.
However, quickly ended up in a Kanye loop.
Next I tried showing a continues wrapping strip of related stories. This worked better at showing clusters of related stories and vertically showing adjacent stories.

With some more work this can give a well rounded visualisation outlining related stories.

I then reintroduced stories without images and built a tool to search specific terms. You can see in this example, though different words are selected, due to the nature of the news API, only recent stories and therefore the same stories are surfaced.
