I found that though the writing tends to hold much of the information to make articles convey their necessary messages, the imagery has served to help drive the messaging home and help it resonate with the audience.

The Guardian had an ongoing photojournalistic project that recounts 20 images form around the world in the passed week. If there stories were just presented as headline with stock photos, as they often are, the messaging wouldn’t follow. However, by selectively curating imagery, a vast account of human experience can be conveyed without any text.

Here is another example by the New Yorker. This one starts the paragraphs that begin the change form black-white text (or vice versa) with the time. This with the sky-colour gradient background, helps the reader emphasise with the content. These simple additions are something I can use to help convey media without all of it.

I found this image manipulation tool that lets you create images reminiscent of some of the photomontages by David Hockney imaged below; here he created motion in images through distortion.

Organising images in this more structures way compared to the images in the Data Vis post works better as an interface.

Here is another photojournalism example. This one has less designed structure than the previous but contains perspectives of an environment we know very little about form the normal media. Having the images big serves the content itself but the lack of structure degrades form the portfolio as a whole. I shall aim for something in-between.

This research got me thinking about how I could structure imagery relating to a story. One of the things I tries was relation rings around stories visualising related ideas, working the the same article form before.

As you can see they show promise but don’t work. At least statically like above.
